UK launches Critical Minerals Strategy – Vision 2035

A hugely welcome step forward for UK industry with the release of the Government’s new Critical Minerals Strategy a roadmap to secure the materials that power our modern economy and green transition.

Critical minerals like lithium, nickel, cobalt, rare earth elements and graphite are essential for EV batteries, wind turbines & solar panels, communications & infrastructure, defence, transport, life sciences & more. Without them, our economy would grind to a halt.

Demand is soaring. By 2035, UK demand for lithium alone is expected to rise by 1,100%, with copper almost doubling. As global supply chains become more concentrated and geopolitically exposed, building a secure, domestic and circular supply is now a strategic imperative.

Vision 2035 Targets

To strengthen resilience and competitiveness, the UK will aim to:

Meet 10% of industrial demand through domestic production (extraction, processing & refining)

Produce at least 50,000 tonnes of lithium domestically by 2035

Meet 20% of demand via recycling of critical minerals from end-of-life products

Diversify imports so no more than 60% of any mineral comes from one country

Altilium is building the UK’s firstly fully circular EV battery supply chain, from battery collection to refining of critical minerals like lithium, cobalt and graphite, supporting UK industrial resilience and creating new green jobs.
