recell.store, the UK’s first online marketplace for used EV batteries and an Altilium company, has today announced the expansion of its leadership team with the appointment of Simon Reid as Managing Director and Tom Rumboll, former CEO of leading vehicle recycling company SYNETIQ, as a Board Advisor. The strategic hires underscore recell.store’s commitment to accelerating a circular economy for EV batteries in the UK and will help position the platform for its next phase of growth.
Backed by leading UK clean technology group Altilium, recell.store provides a dedicated platform for businesses to buy and sell used EV batteries for reuse, repurposing or responsible recycling. With over 30 industry partners in place and a growing inventory of used batteries, the platform is leading the charge to tackle one of the most pressing sustainability challenges facing the EV ecosystem: how to efficiently and safely manage the growing volume of used batteries once they reach the end of their first life.
Simon Reid takes up the new role of managing director from 1st August, having spent the last nine months working as a financial consultant for Altilium. During that time he has been instrumental in the roll-out of recell.store, overseeing the development of the website and brand identity, as well as forging new partnerships across the industry, from national fleet operators to independent vehicle dismantlers.
With over 25 years’ experience of leading large teams within the UK banking sector and a proven track record of delivering operational excellence, Simon’s leadership will be pivotal in driving commercial growth, expanding partnerships and enhancing customer value across the platform.
“I’m thrilled to be leading this next phase of growth for recell.store and building on the great work we’ve achieved in recent months,” said Simon. “With growing volumes of EV and BESS batteries available for re-use and recycling, this a pivotal moment in the evolution of the EV sector and a fantastic opportunity for the UK to take the lead on circularity and sustainability.”
Tom Rumboll is widely recognised as a passionate advocate for sustainability and has worked in senior roles in a number of circular economy businesses. He is currently the principal of TR Advisory Ltd, which was established to support ambitious businesses in developing and executing their strategies. Through his firm, Tom played a pivotal role in the merger that led to the creation of SYNETIQ as the UK’s market-leading salvage and vehicle recycling business.
As Executive Chairman and then CEO of SYNETIQ, Tom established key strategic partnerships in EV recycling and led the business through a sale to IAAF Inc. in 2021. His extensive network of industry relationships and experience of scaling high-growth businesses will prove invaluable for the next phase of recell.store’s growth strategy.
“I am absolutely delighted to join the recell.store team as a Board Advisor,” said Tom. “With leading edge technology and processes, supportive and high quality partners, fantastic people and long term thinking, I am excited to support the growth and development of recell.store and help build an at-scale EV battery infrastructure in the UK.”
As the transition to EVs accelerates, the need for scalable solutions to manage battery lifecycles has never been greater. Over the next decade, over 100 million EV batteries are expected to reach the end of their useful life globally. In the UK alone, 339,000 tonnes of EV batteries are expected to reach their end of their life annually by 2040.
By connecting buyers and sellers through a trusted online platform, recell.store provides customers with a safe and responsible way to trade used EV batteries, ensuring these valuable resources find a new life beyond their original use and supporting the transition to a more sustainable transport future. Through its growing online community, recell.store is also providing partners with support and data as they diversify their businesses from being wholly focused on ICE vehicles to EVs.
