As the transition to EVs accelerates, the challenge of managing end-of-life EV batteries is becoming more urgent.

Over the next decade, over 100 million EV batteries are expected to reach the end of their useful life globally. In the UK alone, 339,000 tonnes of EV batteries are expected to reach their end of their life annually by 2040.

Today, most EV batteries are expected to last anywhere from 10 to 15 years before they need replacing. However, these batteries can still retain up to 80% of their original energy storage capacity and many will have a useful second life, for domestic or commercial energy storage.

As the batteries in many earlier EV models are beginning to reach the end of their useful life in a vehicle, its essential that effective methods for reuse and repurposing are established to ensure these resources find a new life beyond their original use.

Those batteries that are not suitable for reuse or have come to the end of their second life will also have value, as the critical metals that power them, including lithium and nickel, can be recycled and recovered for production of new EV batteries, thus reducing our dependency on mined raw materials and fully closing the loop on the EV battery supply chain.
