Altilium has filed a new patent for innovations related to the generation of black mass through the shredding of lithium-ion batteries. With this latest filing, Altilium now has five patent applications in process, all strategically focused within the UK.

Altilium is pioneering the UK’s only fully circular EV battery business model. Our unique offering includes zero-carbon battery collection, recycling into black mass and chemical refining to produce cathode active material (CAM).

By securing patents across the value chain, we are safeguarding our technological assets, ensuring operational control and differentiating our business in a way that sets Altilium apart from competitors focused on isolated parts of the value chain.

Our unique approach focuses on realizing economies of scale and capturing value at every stage of the EV battery lifecycle. We’re building “economic moats” across the recycling value chain, positioning Altilium as the UK’s leading battery recycling champion. This will support automotive OEMs in meeting sustainability goals and complying with regulatory requirements for recycled content in new batteries.

Looking ahead, we envision large-scale battery recycling centred around CAM production, with full upstream integration. Our Teesside hub will be the UK’s largest integrated battery recycling facility, capable of processing 50,000 MT of black mass annually and supplying 30,000 MT of CAM back into the UK’s growing Gigafactory complex.
