Altilium have spent an inspiring week in Chile, joining up with our new partners at SQM Lithium Ventures to experience first-hand their commitment to sustainability and innovation in the production of lithium.
We were honoured to be guests at the launch of the SQM Lithium Ventures GEN3 Acceleration program in Antofagasta, meeting the entrepreneurs selected to be part of the third generation of start-ups developing high-impact sustainable projects to transform the future of the lithium business.
Since 2022, SQM Lithium Ventures has been supporting companies that are working to build a more sustainable world and developing Antofagasta as a world class hub for entrepreneurs.
As the first SQM Lithium Ventures portfolio company in the UK, Altilium is proud to be part of this family and excited to be working together to pioneer new technologies for the recovery of lithium and other critical raw materials from end-of-life EV batteries.
Altilium was also invited on a tour of SQM’s lithium operations in the Salar de Atacama, which boasts the world’s largest and best lithium reserves from brines, as well as its refining plant in Antofagasta.
Witnessing SQM’s innovation in new technologies, not only to optimise production but also minimise environmental impact, has been truly impressive. From implementing processes to reduce water consumption, to new extraction technologies, every aspect of SQM’s production reflects a genuine effort to reduce the environmental footprint of battery raw materials.
The trip has highlighted the importance of responsible lithium production in meeting the growing global demand for EV batteries and energy storage. As one of the world’s leading producers of lithium for EV batteries, SQM is at the forefront of pioneering sustainable practices in one of the most critical industries for our net zero challenge.
SQM’s investment in Altilium reflects our shared vision for a circular supply chain for low carbon battery materials and both companies’ commitment to addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing the world today. SQM’s expertise and global presence will play a crucial role in solidifying our position as a leader in EV battery recycling in the UK and Europe, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable transport future.
