Materials production is responsible for approximately half of the greenhouse gas emissions from battery production, and recycled materials typically have a lower carbon footprint than the same materials from virgin sources. For example, production of recycled aluminum creates approximately 95% less greenhouse gas emissions compared to producing aluminum from natural sources.

The study has looked at salvaging the copper, cobalt, nickel and aluminium which gives a very large credit since these materials have such a high CO2 impact at production.  This would translate to a 15% net reduction in battery life-cycle emissions.

Carbon credits are measurable, verifiable emission reductions from certified climate action projects. These projects reduce, remove or avoid greenhouse gas emissions.

Altilium Metals Recycling plants can issue carbon credits. Each credit which corresponds to one metric ton of reduced CO2, can be used to compensate for the emission of one ton of carbon dioxide.

For the Medet plant a 10,000 MT cathode waste recycling facility results in a carbon saving of 50,000 MT per year which compliments Altilium Metals climate goal to reduce global emissions, enhance livelihoods and protect the planet.
